\u201cIl toro cornuto\u201d, the legend of the Duomo\u2019s horned bull<\/h2>\n

The first of our five things to see in Florence is always on display in plain sight of thousands of tourists who visit the city every day, but very few notice it. It is a\u00a0bull\u2019s head<\/strong>\u00a0carved no less than … on the facade of the\u00a0Cathedral<\/strong>!<\/p>\n

If you look carefully, you can see the animal on the top of a supporting column near the\u00a0Via Ricasoli corner<\/strong>. Popular tradition has it that a very beautiful lady lived right in front of the cathedral building site during its construction. She was the wife of a tailor, but also the mistress of a master stonemason who worked on the wall decorations. Allegedly, it was the stonemason who carved the bull\u2019s head with marked\u00a0\u201ccuckold\u201d horns<\/strong>\u00a0as a sign of mockery toward the woman\u2019s husband!<\/p>\n

The window that is always open: a love story<\/h2>\n

Now, we move to\u00a0Piazza Della Santissima Annunziata\u00a0<\/strong>and behold\u00a0Palazzo Budini-Gattai\u00a0<\/strong>(also known as Palazzo Grifoni), the scene of a tragic love story. If you look closely, you will notice that the building has\u00a0a window that always remains open<\/strong>, at most with the shutters slightly half-closed.<\/p>\n

The legend goes back to the end of the 16th century and relates that a beautiful young bride spent her entire life embroidering in front of that window, waiting for her beloved to return from the war. It is said that her\u00a0ghost<\/strong>\u00a0is still there and that if someone tries to close the window, strange things happen…<\/p>\n

Who has the longest stone? The \u201ccontest\u201d in the Pitti Palace<\/h2>\n

Have you visited the\u00a0Palazzo Pitti<\/strong>? Well, once you are outside the building, look carefully at its facade: you will notice that there are\u00a0two stones<\/strong>\u00a0of a particular size, one much longer and one much shorter than the others.<\/p>\n

It seems that it was\u00a0Luca Pitti<\/strong>\u00a0himself, a bitter rival of the Medicis, who wanted them that way so that he could identify himself in the longer stone and the opposing family in the smaller, insignificant one. Considering the rivalry of the times, it is said that again in this atmosphere of competition, he had ordered that his family mansion should be so big that it could absorb Palazzo Strozzi within it.\u00a0A proud man this Mr. Pitti!<\/p>\n

Madonna del puzzo: a curious condemnation of street smells in Forence<\/h2>\n

So much for\u00a0Michelangelo\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0David<\/strong>! The\u00a0most peculiar sculpture in Florence\u00a0<\/strong>is surely\u00a0Madonna del puzzo \u2013 the Madonna of the stench<\/strong>, a terracotta bust located in Via Toscanella; it stands in a niche in the Torre dei Marsili and depicts the Virgin who, raising her eyes to the sky, plugs her nose with her fingers while a rat runs up her arm.<\/p>\n

Artist\u00a0Mario Mariotti\u00a0<\/strong>created the work in\u00a01984<\/strong>\u00a0to protest against the\u00a0foul smell wafting from the dumpsters\u00a0<\/strong>stationed on that street and to generally condemn the neglect and degradation of the historic town center.<\/p>\n

The scandal stone and the Florence of yesteryear<\/h2>\n

Near the Ponte Vecchio, the market that is held under\u00a0the Loggia del Porcellino<\/strong>\u00a0is one of the\u00a0best places to shop in Florence<\/a>. Right in the center of the loggia, if you look hard enough, you will come across a\u00a0two-tone marble round<\/strong>, a life-size reproduction of one of the wheels of the Carroccio, the symbol of the Florentine Republic. It is the so-called\u00a0\u201cscandal stone\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>or\u00a0\u201cacculata,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0the spot where\u00a0insolvent debtors\u00a0<\/strong>in the Renaissance were punished in a particularly humiliating way. How? Chained and with their trousers pulled down, they would be repeatedly pushed to the ground on their rear ends.<\/p>\n
