Standing next to it is the\u00a0<strong>Civic Tower\u00a0<\/strong>or\u00a0<strong>Ghirlandina<\/strong>, the city&#8217;s undisputed icon and, at least according to the people of Modena, the most beautiful bell tower in the world. Built by\u00a0<strong>Arrigo da Campione<\/strong>, it had the dual function of a religious tower and a lookout and defense garrison. You can admire the\u00a0<strong>monument to Ciro Menotti<\/strong>, the\u00a0<strong>Fonte d&#8217;Abisso<\/strong>, but above all, the grand\u00a0<strong>Ducal Palace<\/strong>, a jewel rich in art and history.<\/p>\n<p>Considered the\u00a0<strong>first Baroque palazzo in Italy<\/strong>, it was built starting in 1634 on the site of the former Este Castle and is now home to the<strong>\u00a0Military Academy\u00a0<\/strong>and its Museum.
