The crown jewel of the Kingdom of Naples: the Royal Palace of Caserta<\/strong><\/h3>\n

In 1750, King Charles of Bourbon commissioned the design of the Royal Palace of Caserta to the greatest Italian architect of the time, Luigi Vanvitelli. With its 56 rooms and 1,200 staircases, the Royal Palace alone covers an area of about 47,000 square meters<\/strong> (the equivalent of more than 6 soccer fields!). In addition, there are approximately 100 hectares of Park and the English Garden.<\/p>\n

Pomp and power \u2013 The Royal Apartments and the Court Theater <\/strong><\/h3>\n

Everything in the Royal Palace of Caserta was meant to express pageantry, power, wonder. The Royal Apartments are filled with works of art, while in the Throne Room<\/strong>, a “simple” 40-meter hall, stands a large portable throne made of wood and gold! Imagine the amazement of those who visited the Palace…<\/p>\n

The Court Theater<\/strong>, on the other hand \u2013 expressly requested by the king himself \u2013 takes its cue from the San Carlo of Naples. He was ahead of his time because he was the first to introduce the horseshoe-shaped floor plan and balconies, which other very famous theaters \u2013 such as the one at the Palace of Versailles<\/strong> \u2013 would later copy.<\/p>\n

The Royal Palace of Caserta… without going inside it<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The Palace complex also includes the Park, within which both the Palace and the English Garden<\/strong> are located. It looks somewhat disorderly, but the Royals wanted it to resemble a kind of miniature forest with streams and fake ruins, in keeping with the fashion of the time. It was at that time, in fact, that archaeologists started finding the first remains of Pompeii.<\/p>\n

The Royal Palace of the Royal Palace of Caserta is open to the public daily, except Tuesdays, from 8.30 am to 7.00 pm. Admission is free up to the age of 18, and everyone has free access to the Historic Apartments on the first Sunday of the month.<\/p>\n
