A small town, many activities to try and delicious food to try! Read our mini-guide on what to do in Rovereto: boredom isn’t an option!
Are you looking for somewhere to spend a spring weekend away from the urban frenzy? Consider Rovereto, a small town in Trentino that will surprise you with its very rich offerings: science museums for the little ones, 20th-century art and history, tasty cuisine, and via ferratas for mountain and climbing enthusiasts. We propose five legs for you to get to know this jewel of Trentino!
The MART: futurism and art gardens
It is one of Europe’s most important museums: the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Trento and Rovereto (MART), established in 1987, houses many important works such as paintings by Giacomo Balla and Carlo Carrà, among the most prominent exponents of Futurism; canvases by Giorgio De Chirico; and a permanent selection of sculptures displayed outdoors in the Sculpture Garden.
You can visit the MART from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10 am to 6 pm, and on Fridays from 10 am to 9 pm. You can buy tickets or book a guided tour on the official website.
Casa Depero: house of art and anarchy
The MART also comprises the Casa d’Arte Futurista Depero, Italy’s first and only futurist museum, which played a crucial part in restoring and enhancing the complex. It was founded by the forerunner of futurism and contemporary design, Fortunato Depero. Works, tools, toys – the Casa (House) brings to life the ironic and somewhat anarchic spirit of the artist in its permanent collection and temporary exhibitions.
It is located in the heart of the historic center of Rovereto, e puoi visit the House every day (except Mondays) from 10.00 am to 6.00 pm.
The Legacy of the Great War
From figurative art to the chronicles of our history. The mountains around Rovereto were the site of intense fighting during World War I, and its legacy is preserved and narrated at the Italian War History Museum, which opened as early as 1921. Photographs, soldiers’ endowments, and written accounts such as posters or leaflets illustrate what the war was like a century ago.
For a preview of the experience, this short video shows you some of the rooms and artifacts kept by the museum, which you can visit from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10.00 am to 6.00 pm. Here are all the details:
…Thence we came forth to behold again the stars
Watching the sun and stars at an altitude of 1620 meters, breathing cleaner air, and away from the lights of the city: you can try this experience at the Astronomical Observatory on Mount Zugna, not far from the center of Rovereto.
The facility has three telescopes and organizes both daytime and evening tours as well as educational workshops. The observatory opens every third Sunday of the month and on the occasion of bookings or guided tours.
Typical culinary delights
You cannot end your tour of Rovereto without first tasting some traditional Trentino specialties, which you can find in two of the city’s typical trattorias.
The first is Trattoria da Christian: home cooking, sandwiches that can be composed as desired with the fragrant salami and cheeses of Trentino, and very (very) hearty dishes. Ideal for refueling after a day out on the town or some strenuous climbing!
The second is Trattoria Bellavista, a historic trattoria in Rovereto that has continued to attract tourists – and loyal local customers – since the 1960s, thanks to delicacies such as dumplings, game and homemade pasta. You wouldn’t head home without a lunch or dinner enjoyed like a Trentino local, would you?
