Francesco moved to a hut just outside Greccio and, admiring the landscape similar to the city of Bethlehem, decided to re-enact the birth of Jesus in this very village carved into the rock.

According to the biographies of St. Francis, the lord of the castle, following the advice of the saint, had a crib built in a cave under the castle of the town. During a religious ceremony, a child appeared and St. Francis took him in his arms.
