Italo acquires Itabus, the long-distance bus company to combine its high-speed train network with road transport.
On 5 May 2023, the Board of Directors of Italo – Nuovo Trasporto Viaggiatori SpA approved the acquisition of Itabus, the private long-distance road passenger transport company operational since the end of May 2021.
Itabus has already exceeded 2 million travelers and connects all over Italy, including Sicily, with its 100 MAN (Volkswagen group) buses. The buses are of the latest generation and are equipped with free 4/5G wi-fi, restrooms, and vending machines for snacks and drinks. They are double-decker vehicles with 74 seats each and two travel classes, Comfort+ and Top.
Italo adds its high-quality service to the road transport sector and allows you to travel both day and night, as Itabus offers lots of connections to large and small Italian cities as well as to the most beautiful, centuries-old villages in Italy. With Itabus you also have numerous connections with infrastructure hubs such as airports, stations and ports at your disposal.
Integrating Italo with Itabus will create an efficient transit service able to connect the whole of the Italian territory. The first three regions ready to being with this service, starting 31 May 2023, are Sicily, Puglia and Campania which will become the model for future transit connections.
The service will be active 24 hours a day and will also satisfy the needs of schools, sports clubs, tourist groups, and various kinds of public and private communities.
Italo and Itabus believe in the same values, such as customer care and sustainability! The Italo trains are built with 98% recyclable materials and equipped with HEPA filters for constant air exchange, where as Itabus buses have EURO 6D diesel engines, the least polluting on the market, and thanks to the collaboration with Eni, the entire fleet is powered by Eni diesel+, premium diesel that reduces CO2 emissions compared to traditional fuels.

Once the integration is complete, more and more connections will arise between railway stations, airports, and ports and a network of urban micro-mobility and integrated mobility will develop, which will offer a vast choice of trips that can be purchased from a single multimodal platform and with a single ticket.
“Thanks to this operation, travelers will have a real integrated mobility service at their disposal, a project in which Italo believes and which it has been studying for years to facilitate travel around the area” said Gianbattista La Rocca, Italo’s CEO. “With a fleet of 51 trains and 100 buses for now, but which may grow in the coming years, we will connect all of Italy, serving large cities, tourist villages, and infrastructural hubs, such as ports and airports, 24 hours a day”.
